What is Carbon Accounting? A Quick Definition

Carbon accounting is an accounting method to count, inventory, and report your organization's GHG emissions. This is also known as your carbon footprint. For most companies, the established, global accounting unit for emissions is carbon dioxide (CO2), and "carbon equivalents" (CO2e), the sum of carbon plus other emissions like methane converted into carbon.

If you're familiar with financial accounting, which adds up income and expenses into a budget, carbon accounting works in a similar way. An organization's emissions are its carbon inventory, which can be reduced or netted against carbon improvements or offsets.

Common practice in carbon accounting is categorizing CO2 as Scope 1, Scope 2, or Scope 3 GHG.

Why Use Carbon Accounting Software?

Carbon accounting can be a complex process, particularly for larger enterprise businesses or organizations with complex supply chains. For a lot of the same reasons why it's better to use dedicated accounting software like Quickbooks or Oracle Netsuite for your company's financial accounting, manual and spreadsheet-based carbon accounting is error-prone, doesn't scale, and has major visibility, collaboration, accuracy, audit, and governance issues. It also just takes a lot more time.

Given that emissions reporting requirements are being written into everything from SEC regulation to procurement contracts in 2026, this is information that needs to be accurate and easy to access - and shouldn't tie up all your time to collect and calculate.

The Best Carbon Accounting Software Platform in 2026

Given the nature of our work, we get asked questions like "what's the best carbon accounting software" a lot. And, our honest answer is, there is no best solution overall. What really matters is what's the best solution for your organization and needs. The best solution for one company may not be the right answer for another.

So instead of trying to rank specific tools and brands, we thought it would be more helpful to share the evaluation framework we recommend companies consider when they're considering carbon accounting tools, or developing RFP or RFI requirements for a carbon accounting platform.

For carbon accounting platform buyers, researchers, and analysts, consider these seven criteria to determine what the best carbon accounting software is for your organization:

  1. Organization size and carbon accounting scope
  2. Is your carbon measurement and reporting voluntary or mandatory (i.e., EU CSRD & ESRS)?
  3. Do you need to measure and report Scope 3 emissions?
  4. Your industry and value chain
  5. Primary problem or use case
  6. Internal team and technical capabilities
  7. Other supporting resources
  8. Org structure
  9. Compliance, audit, and IT security needs

Let's walk through each one:

What Changed in Carbon Accounting Software Evaluation Since 2024

The evaluation criteria below still hold, but the weighting has shifted. Three developments between 2024 and 2026 moved requirements that used to be "nice to have" into the category of things that determine whether a tool is viable at all:

  • Assurance readiness stopped being optional. Under California's SB 253, in-scope companies began reporting Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions to CARB in 2026. CARB exercised discretion not to require limited assurance for that first reporting year, and has since proposed moving the initial deadline from August 10 to November 10, 2026 — but it is considering limited assurance for Scope 1 and Scope 2 from 2027 onward. The relevant question for a carbon accounting tool is therefore no longer "can it produce a number", but "can it produce an audit trail an assurance provider will accept" — source documents, calculation methodology, emission factor versioning, and a change log against every restated figure. Tools that store only the output, not the derivation, fail this test regardless of how good the reporting UI is.
  • Scope became a moving target, so configurability matters more than presets. The EU's Omnibus package amended CSRD scoping thresholds, reporting timelines, and assurance obligations; the Canadian Securities Administrators paused its mandatory climate rule in April 2025; and Hong Kong's HKEX brought ISSB-aligned climate disclosures into force from 1 January 2025 on a tiered phase-in. A multinational's obligations in 2026 are a different set from what anyone would have configured in 2026. Software built around a fixed set of framework templates ages badly here — what holds value is a well-modelled underlying data layer that can be mapped to whichever disclosure is actually required.
  • Value chain data collection became the bottleneck. Nearly every regime converging on ISSB-aligned disclosure defers Scope 3 rather than dropping it — Canada's CSDS requires it from reporting periods beginning on or after January 1, 2027 for voluntary adopters, OSFI's Guideline B-15 from fiscal 2028, HKEX for LargeCap issuers from FY2026. Those deferrals are runway, not relief. The practical differentiator between carbon accounting software platforms is now supplier engagement: how the tool collects primary data from suppliers who have no sustainability team, how it handles non-response, and how honestly it distinguishes measured data from spend-based estimates in the output.

If you are re-evaluating a tool you selected before 2025, these are the three areas most likely to have quietly become gaps. The criteria in the following sections remain the right framework for the decision — apply them with these shifts in mind.

1. Organization Size and Carbon Accounting Scope

A global, enterprise brand has very different carbon accounting needs from a small or medium business (SME). Smaller organizations need an easy-to-use, automated, lower-cost solution that can likely be used by one or two administrators. By comparison, global organizations have larger teams and more resources, but also require enterprise workflow and governance support, strict IT security, and comprehensive account management.

Be sure to consider:

  • How many admins and users of this tool need to collaborate in it?
  • Do you want to self-manage (DIY) the tool, or get dedicated support for it?
  • Does it support the roles and permissions my organization requires?
  • What's my geographic implementation and deployment scope?
  • What language(s) do I need supported? Does this carbon accounting tool offer them?
  • How much customization and configuration do I need when it comes to areas like emissions factors, carbon accounting assets, and org environments?
  • Can the tool support Scope 3 carbon accounting? And at what scale of complexity?

2. Value Chain Type

Generally, there are five value chain archetypes or organizational structures when it comes to carbon accounting:

  • Product companies - Materials, CPG, retail, fashion, and other organizations with a physical goods supply chain who need product lifecycle (LCA) carbon accounting
  • Built environment companies - Real estate firms and organizations whose carbon footprint is primarily concentrated in buildings and embodied carbon
  • Startups and cloud technology companies - Firms whose emissions are primarily related to server usage, data centers, and employee activity like travel
  • Services companies - Organizations whose carbon accounting needs are primarily office and employee-based
  • Conglomerates - Organizations with multiple different lines of business who need complex, hierarchical carbon accounting across a global value chain

Many carbon accounting tools focus or specialize their product in specific industries and value chain types. Make sure to understand which use case(s) and sector(s) a carbon accounting platform serves through their website, case studies, client testimonials, and product roadmap.

3. Primary Carbon Accounting Problem or Use Case

This is another area where it's important to be clear (internally) what your top priorities and criteria are. These can include:

  • Do you need any integrations? Does the vendor need to manage them or are internal IT resources available for implementation and deployment?
  • Have you onboarded a similar tool or system like this before? What were the learnings and areas for improvement?
  • How much training, ongoing account support, and vendor guidance do you need?
  • What type of implementation timeline can this carbon accounting partner provide? How quickly will you be up and running?

Different carbon accounting software tools and platforms require different internal commitment levels and resourcing. They also offer different levels of ongoing support and service tiers. Be sure to discuss and understand this during your evaluation.

5. Other Carbon Accounting Support Resources

After you assess your internal capacity and carbon accounting expertise, you may decide you need additional external support. Will that come from the carbon accounting platform provider? Do you need to hire specialist consultants to support your ongoing deployment, data collection, carbon accounting, and/or reporting? Make sure you adequately resource this project for success.

6. Org Structure and Carbon Accounting Data Collaboration

As we've written before, your organization structure is another important variable in selecting the right carbon accounting technology for your company. Where does your carbon accounting data live today? Spreadsheets? Other software tools? Do you need to conduct surveys? Do you need help from other departments and stakeholders in the organization to collect specific data? What about supplier and value chain engagement?

Most organizations don't focus enough on developing sustainability data collection workflows. Think about what's most needed in your organization, look for opportunities to improve, and engage your carbon accounting partners on best practices and ways they can support this.

7. Carbon Accounting Software Compliance, Audit & IT Security Needs

If you operate in a region with higher levels of ESG and environmental regulation like the European Union (EU), are a publicly listed firm, or work in a regulated industry like healthcare or finance, your organization will need a carbon accounting solution that supports capabilities like:

  • GDPR compliance
  • Standards compliance (SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, etc.)
  • Audit logs and workflows
  • Approval workflows
  • Data archiving, retention, storage, and backups

In addition to other strong compliance and security controls. Make sure to work with your IT business partners to evaluate the security and controls of your carbon accounting solution provider.

Another related capability to consider is ESG reporting. Most companies perform carbon accounting as an input into their broader ESG and sustainability reporting. Does your carbon accounting platform offer integrated ESG reporting? Or does that require an integration or add-on with one or more separate vendors? What are the costs and workflows for that type of solution? Can your carbon accounting system also measure other important KPIs like water?

These relationship aspects really matter.

And finally, a word of caution. Given the carbon accounting software space is so new, there's a lot of hype and marketing around it. Ultimately, every company does marketing (including us), and it's expected companies will try to position themselves in the best light. That said, be wary of buzzwords and marketing lingo like "Artificial Intelligence (AI)" and ask thoughtful questions. What does this AI actually do? Is it going assist me with a priority need or workflow?

Most modern software companies (including us) use AI and machine learning - the important question is 'why' and how does it help you?

Similarly, does the product actually exist and work the way it's being demonstrated? Is it in use by companies? Or are you being shown a demo environment that isn't actually in production and widespread use?
