Volunteers are needed to develop the preliterate ESL curriculum, and assist with lesson plan preparation for the Preliteracy Program at the Area Agency on Aging: Elder Refugee Program.

Background: Our agency, the Area Agency on Aging, Region One is part of a national network of organizations established to respond to the needs of older adults. The agency sponsors the Elder Refugee Program through the Arizona Refugee Resettlement program within the Department of Economic Security.

We need your help developing the curriculum for our Pre-Literacy classes; which offer basic, survival English instruction to elderly refugees. The majority of our students are preliterate- meaning that they are not literate in their native language. Many of them did not have access to education in their home countries and enter our classes as first-time learners.

Job Description: Assistance is needed to enhance the existing preliterate curriculum with new worksheets and activities and to prepare the lesson plan materials to be utilized in the 6 different classes taught by volunteers around the Valley. Volunteers can expect to dedicate 3-4 hours per week, with a flexible schedule (within business hours- 8AM-5PM, M-F). Classes run in 3 month sessions (September- November, January- March, March-May).

Duties include:

  • finding new worksheets online and in our resource library
  • writing new lesson plans using an existing template
  • designing new classroom activities
  • making copies and organizing the lesson materials to be delivered to the classroom spaces on a weekly basis
  • maintaining our library of curriculum materials

Experience: Volunteers should have some teaching experience. Developing the curriculum requires an understanding of the classroom environment. Occasional class visits may be encouraged as a way to test new material. Strong organizational skills are required.

Training:There is a training component to this position; volunteer orientation and 3 class observations before beginning to volunteer.

This is a flexible activity that can be completed whenever you have enough free time.
