Like most states, Arizona has very limited coronavirus (COVID-19) testing capabilities. Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute is working to dramatically increase available coronavirus testing by using robots that can process a high volume of samples, while simultaneously and working to open a drive-thru testing site for the general public. By using robots to process samples, ASU can offer testing at a faster rate than state and hospital labs. Faced with a testing kit bottleneck, health care officials and the state have lacked the ability to conduct widespread testing to screen for the virus, even among those who may be exhibiting symptoms or who are at risk already. If successful, ASU will provide a crucial service that could start to turn the tide in fighting this outbreak throughout Arizona. ASU’s estimate is Arizona will need a minimum of 100,000 tests. The Biodesign Institute is confident its experienced research teams can assist in meeting this critical need and is seeking donations and philanthropic support for these relief efforts.
