What

Are you passionate about social justice and community space? Do you enjoy problem-solving? Are you eager to find a way to support your community? Interested in serving women from all backgrounds and walks of life?

Volunteer with the Cambridge Women's Center - a supportive community space for all women. (PLEASE READ APPLICATION INFO AT THE BOTTOM!)

With only two full-time paid staff (and only one paid staff in Direct Service), we rely on over 200 volunteers to run our Center each year.

Currently, over 50 volunteers donate their time for 2-15 hours a week to run our Drop-In & Helpline Program. This is where our biggest need is for volunteers. Please note that we have regularly scheduled mandatory orientation trainings for the Drop-In & Helpline.

Internships are also available for school credit or for no school credit, and follow the same basic template

We are currently accepting applications for fall volunteers. Each cohort of volunteers begins by attending an initial, mandatory day-long training. We depend on our volunteers in a unique way, especially as we only have 1 paid direct service staff member and 1 unpaid direct service (part-time) staff member. The mandatory training is on Saturday, September 7th (10am-4:30pm).

The Cambridge Women's Center serves primarily vulnerable, housing-insecure, socially isolated, and low-income women in the Cambridge and Greater Boston area. Volunteers are depended on to staff the Center at all times. As a drop-in & helpline volunteer, you will:

  • Provide general staffing of the 4-story home
  • Provide emotional support in-person & on the phone
  • Have conversations & provide social support to members
  • Assist members with resource referrals and small projects
  • Perform regular walk-throughs of the house
  • Participate in cleaning, recording data, organizing, and other needed tasks
  • Be a present advocate for our members to turn to
  • Help with special projects as interest/time allows

Some days are quiet, and others are hectic and emotionally charged. Just your presence alone allows us to stay open. There will be downtime & busy days, and we expect volunteers to be able to handle both, as well as check in with their supervisors for support. Volunteers should expect to encounter a wide range of topics.

As a volunteer you will receive ongoing support and education from regularly scheduled trainings and volunteer meetings. In addition, you will receive regular check-ins from either our Volunteer Manager, Anna Plotkin-Swing, or our Director, Jessye Kass.

For Volunteers: We require a 6-month commitment and at least 3 hours a week.

Applications can be submitted here: Volunteer Application -- https://forms.gle/ kLaYPBP36NXQyZGF8

For Interns: We are looking for full-year Sep-May interns ONLY, and at least 6 hours a week. (You do not need to be of school age/school credit for an internship).
