Who We Are

Chamber Orchestra of New York, the city’s premier fully-auditioned young professionals orchestra, is a springboard for young classical music artists, an on-ramp for classical music lovers, and a starting point of music education for youth.

We aim to achieve our mission through our lighthearted, engaging music programming and our programs including The Respighi Prize music competition for emerging soloists, composers and conductors, New York Conducting Workshop, and our new education initiative Maestro Juniors for Title One New York City Public Schools.

In 2007, Chamber Orchestra of New York (CONY) performed its inaugural concert in Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, where it now holds its annual Masterworks Series. The orchestra also performs regularly at The Morgan Library & Museum and Adelphi University Performing Arts Center. The orchestra’s Naxos Records albums are airing internationally to critical acclaim.

This year, we are performing two concerts where we would like to use a videographer:

Friday, June 7, 2019, 7:30pm, Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, Garden City, Long Island, NY

Thursday, June 27, 2019, 7:30pm Cary Hall at DiMenna Center, New York, NY

We also perform for fashion shows, such as Dolce & Gabbana and Tory Burch. Dependent on the client, there may be further opportunities to work together with the videographer on these projects.

CONY is seeking to rebrand its image with high quality images and videos of its musicians, conductor, and audiences to engage 25 to 45 year old audiences and prospective sponsors. We are seeking to highlight the color and chaos of classical music through intimate portraits of the performers and audience. Close up images with richness of color and emotion that show the energy and enjoyment will be used for our website, social media, and future programming and sponsorship opportunities.

The Role

CONY is seeking a professional videographer who will document our story at concerts. We would like to establish an ongoing relationship with the videographer and use her/him at every concert. At this point, we would hire the individual for the first concert (above) to begin with and determine whether the results were effective to continue to other performances.

The Adelphi University Performing Arts Center seats 482 seats and has a stage depth of 19 feet. The stage is 70 feet from the back row of the orchestra seating, where video camera recording will need to take place. Complete technical specifications can be found here: https://pac.adelphi.edu/wp-content/blogs.dir/18/files/2012/06/concert_hall_specs.pdf .

Interior images may be found here:

https://pac.adelphi.edu/about-the-center/our-venue/concert-hall/ .

Cary Hall at the Dimenna Center will seat 150 people with the capability for the photographer to move around the entire space freely and use lighting as needed. The room is 55 feet by 66 feet. Technical specifications can be seen here: https://dimennacenter.org/mary-flagler-cary-hall/ .

We need at least a two camera set up, with one camera shooting the conductor and the other shooting the whole orchestra. A third camera that would be able to do close-ups would be ideal. If you are able to do this please provide your fee for a two camera and three camera setup.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Videotaping the musicians and conductor during concerts, that reinforces CONY as a community of enthusiastic, youthful, engaged, emotional, and thoughtful classical music lovers. Preparation of communications with Music Director.

Desired skills and Experience

  • Ability to communicate effectively and timely and be able to discuss their artistic thoughts and plans to capture pivotal images during the course of the concert with our Music Director prior to the event.
  • Professional videographer with an available online portfolio that represents how they get amazing high quality videos in concert hall environments with moving performers on stage at a distance.
  • Have the right equipment and the technical know how to use it to get the best video to tell CONY’s story.
  • Strong knowledge of classical music who can plan where to focus the camera lens based on the music throughout the concert.
  • Identifying and anticipating the moments and performers where emotion and engagement are shown.
  • Ability to provide edited videos of the individual musical pieces back to CONY with quick turnaround, a maximum of 10 days after the concert, preferably through a password-protected, secure online site. A title card should be displayed at the beginning of every video, identifying the orchestra and the music.
