Founded in 2010, Mittens for Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collects, purchases, and distributes new mittens and gloves for children and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved cities. From October 1st through January 31st each year, pairs are donated in public collections. These are then sorted, counted, and packed by volunteers in The Big Sort. Partner agencies, organizations, schools, shelters and the like then pick up their boxes of pairs for distribution to their guests, families, students, residents, and so on.
In our first eight years, Mittens for Detroit collected nearly one-quarter million pairs of new mittens and gloves.
