Let's build a safer, better future, together.

Across hundreds of organizations, dozens of countries, and in all 50 states and over 100 global cities (and growing), each day people like you use Brightest to find ways to make themselves, their communities, their companies, and our collective future better.

We can only enable this type of impact by making the Brightest community an open yet secure network of sustainability practitioners, changemakers, causes, organizations, volunteers, and other partners. That requires safety, trust, and a strong moral and ethical compass to guide our decision-making and conduct.

Although our ultimate goal is for you to go out and create change in person, within and across your organization, and in the real world, we take steps here at Brightest to try to help make that experience as safe as possible for you. That includes:

volunteering and non-profit reviews

Cause & Activity Reviews

We encourage you and other members of our community to review and rate the experiences and causes you discover through Brightest. Our moderators, editors and curating team-members also monitor all aspects of the service to identify potentially unsafe opportunities or partners who don't meet our trust and community standards, as well as to verify the 501(c)3 or tax-exempt status of registered charities. Bottom line: we're looking out for you. That said, if you see a problem we've overlooked, tell us and we'll do something about it.

Ethical AI & Risk Prevention

We use predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning (ML) to improve the quality of our services, as well as evaluate community signals that help us flag and address suspicious activity or platform violations. Your trust and safety are critically important to us, and we'll keep investing more and more to keep you and the rest of our community safe. Broadly, we recognize that ML and other forms of AI are imperfect, and, when not properly trained or monitored, can create or reinforce unfair biases and unjust impacts. As a result, we make it a point to ensure all work and code in these territories (a) have human oversight and control, (b) are actively and thoroughly tested, and (c) get monitored and reviewed regularly - by people.

Platform & Data Security

We take a number of measures to safeguard this site and your account with us. As long as you communicate and use our website or app, you're protected by our multi-layer security protections, including universal SSL/HTTPS, safe password hashing (PBKDF2), and encryption of stored data. Brightest is built on the Django web framework, and you can read more about its security architecture and approach here. Ultimately, consistent with our mission, privacy policy, and terms of service, we pledge to always put you and your security ahead of any organizational goals whenever and wherever we can. To learn more about how we're keeping Brightest safe and secure for everyone, please see our security overview.
